In the past couple of years I have been messing around with my family portrait style. While I started doing family portraits in a studio setting, the last year I have preferred to shoot on location and let the family dynamic evolve in front of the camera for a more natural perspective. Trying to get kids and adults to sit still and act natural for a photo seems particularly unnatural. However letting kids lead their family on a little adventure during the photo shot or letting adults have their own moment together seems to get more natural results. We are particularly lucky...
Most of the time when I go to shoot a newspaper assignment, it is my only focus. I think about the possible situation on the way there, what I need from the assignment and what I hope to get. Once there, I dive into the situation with full focus.
Every now and then though I find myself distracted by a more photogenic situation. Such was the case last year while I was on assignment with a volunteer Vail police officer. As we drove through Vail village looking for minor traffic infractions, saw the full moon rising over the Gore Range which was light up by alpen glow. I insisted...
The funny thing about working as a staff photojournalist for a newspaper like the Vail Daily is that any time there is a really good sporting event you very rarely get to use your best shots. I was second shooter for a wedding at Breckenridge this past weekend with photographer Kira Horvath. Beautiful weather, beautiful relaxed fun couple, Andrew and Lesley Perry. Ceremony was on top of the mountain surrounded by wildlife ( a fox and an elk visited) and the most perfect fall colors. Decided to use my still fairly new 50mm 1.2 lens. Was perfect for capturing the fall foliage and the relaxed mood of the wedding.
Kira followed the bride's preparation while I followed the groom's preparation. It was nice to work with a fun flexible group of guys who weren't at all intimated...
The children's experience.
Views of the ceremonyBride and soon to be step daughter share a moment on the gondola before the ceremony.Heading out to be second shooter for a wedding this weekend in Breckenridge and have been reflecting on the last wedding I shot by myself on Vail Mountain and what I liked about it and what I thought I was missing. I loved the simplicity of the wedding and so tried to reflect that through my style of photography. Focused on using predominantly natural lighting, showing clean lines, lots of black and white photography, lots of close-ups illustrating the overwhelming...
