Japan has been a dream snowboard destination for me for many years and so when the opportunity (unusually cheap airfares) arouse in January 2012, it was too good to ignore. This began predominantly as a snowboard story about riding unmeasurably deep powder in a culturally different country. It soon became two stories, one about riding deep untracked powder in a foreign country and one about the joys of the Japanese cultural experience. Unlike photographing heli-skiing in Alaska where you only ride if it's blue skies, photographing snowboarding in Japan where we only saw the sun two or three times, the trick was to keep your camera as dry as possible in continuous snowstorms and capture the riders and skiers without them having to stop 'cause there are still no friends on a powder day.
